Math vs. English: The Color Blue
There are rules everywhere.
"Me went to get the store and buyed a blue popcicle."
Can I say this?
What is wrong with this?
The grammar is incorrect, the spelling is incorrect. Does it make sense?
You can understand what I'm saying right?
What did I do? Went to the store. What did I buy? A blue icy treat.
Why can't I say it this way then?
Oh, because of the rules.
There has to be some criteria of how we express things. If not, we might as well live in a hole. We would still be cavemen.
How do we learn about language? How did we ever discover that "this means this" and when "they say this they mean that"?
Because there was a system set up to "translate" what we are talking about. We call our system English. Then we compared our system to that of others so that we could figure out what they were saying. This transfer of ideas by the means of communication is what makes our species one that is not still living in a hole. We evolved because of our ability to learn and communicate with others.. check the history books.
Math is the same system of communicating ideas... it is just deeper and more precise.
Hypothetically,
You were born and loved your Momma, you think back on a day that you and Momma were looking up at the sky. Your Momma said "Look at that beautiful green sky son, that is the most beautiful shade of green I have ever seen. Do you see it? How beautiful is that green sky my son?"
You never thought anything of it. You went to kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, fifth,... 12th grade, and no one had ever told you any different. It just never came up. The sky is green.
Then you are laying in the grass with your girlfriend, who you have been dating for 10 months. This is major. You're in the park. You're on a blanket. She has her hand in yours. You're trying to pick out animal figures in the sky. She says, "Look, look, that one looks like and elephant! See its trunk right there, and there is the body!"
"Ha! Ha! Ha!", You laugh together.
She looks in your eyes and says "This is so fun! I have always loved the contrast between the white clouds, the green grass, and the blue sky. I love you."
Wait, the sky is green.
Although unlikely, you've never known any different.
How exactly does she explain to you that the sky is blue?
"No hun! It just is because it IT IS! The grass is green and the sky is blue."
Green. Blue. These are just words to describe things. They are just letters put together to show a difference between two different things. They are just rules.
The thing about math is that math is just a system (like English) that was set up so that there is a more precise way of expressing something.
Colors have this same system. Remember the primaries? Red, blue, yellow. These are just three words that set up a system to define other colors. Red plus blue is purple. Red plus yellow is orange. Blue plus yellow is green. Key term here being "plus". How could we ever describe these colors without the word "plus".
"Plus" is a math term. Math language is a precise way of expressing something. The word "plus" relates directly to a number line. The number 2 plus the number 2 is four on a number line. The number line is just a reference when trying to explain something.
For example,
My car is dark blue. What does it mean to be dark blue? Can you explain it? It's darker. What does darker mean?
Well math gives you a precise way of explaining the difference of dark blue compared to light blue. Draw a line. Dark blue is right here and light blue would be less that or to the left of that spot on the line.
